He who knows not, and knows not that he knows not, is a fool. Shun him.

He who knows not, and knows that he knows not is simple. Teach him.

He who knows, and knows not that he knows, is asleep. Wake him.

He who knows, and knows that he knows is wise. Follow him.

Hey Josh!

Sorry I didn't reply to your email, I've been so busy (so busy that I made a comment last week, but didn't get a chance to finish it, and I'm starting over). I did read that post about your new job, and I thought it was everything I was interested in hearing about. I think you offered a great deal of insight about the joys of working in research. I also noticed you didn't go through the negatives of it, but I guess a positive attitude is the better one :) I like your new layout and hope you can return to posting soon.

Nicely put. As well there should be room for those fighting the good fight, so I'm not opposed to people giving their opinions per se. However, some people too frequently give their opinions on matters without thoughts of educating, but rather showing off their melodious voice.

I agree with having an open-minded thought process to allow new ideas to flow through. But I also think it is necessary to have an opinion and assert it when possible. If you stand passive in your thought process you will find that you will not learn all the different perspectives of a given argument.

What I'm trying to get at, is that when counter parties create dialog, a real truth can be derived from a lively debate and that all parties involved, as long as they are not entrenched in their positions, will learn something.

#3 would be instead of your ability to convince people to do things, it would be your ability to teach things.

Think about it, if you're a fancy neurosurgeon and come up with some fancy head trauma technique that reduces the risk of brain damage, but you can't teach it, than it's only a viable technique while you're alive.

Further, #3 also goes onto your ability to persuade people to take on risks that could save their lives. In business, you need to be able to convince others your ideas are good, in medicine, not everyone is receptive to advice.

Plus there's also bedside manner.

I guess, you could be a very successful doctor by being very gifted at your specialization. However, if other doctors don't like you, than you'll find that people's agendas will always be against you.

Hey Danny,

Good to see you around again, I was getting a little worried about you.

Nice post! I agree that we need some perspective on our skills and life in general, but I'm a bit confused about lesson #3 and how it does or does not relate to doctors, etc. If you could elaborate, that would be peaches.
